Mike’s Blog

Growing up in Massachusetts, Mike Tagg studied piano and saxophone and had a brother who played guitar. He started playing bass at age fourteen when his first band decided they needed a bass player.

Mike grew up listening to Motown, fusion jazz of the seventies, bad 80’s metal and pop, grunge of the 90’s, and every progressive rock CD he could get his hands on. Influenced by anything that had a good groove and the driving force of the progressive rock he liked, Mike annoyed many but those who knew him grew to understand his love for these two musical polar opposites.

He studied bass and piano under several teachers in and out of Boston. Playing in many bar bands and original projects in and out of the city gave Mike a chance to hone his craft and meet many amazing people who shared his love of music. During this time Mike played original music with Front Royale, the Christian Montgomery Band, several singer/songwriter projects, and a roving rock/rap/hip hop band. He also continued to play seedy bars and smoky clubs with Two Days Later, True Pedestrians, Bent 4 the Rent, and several blues/rock projects.

Mike moved to Florida in 2005 to find warmer climates, ride his motorcycle year round and attend American Motorcycle Institute. After completing his course of study he got a non-motorcycle related job and continued to work in the human service field helping those in need. Once he had a steady job Mike began to look around Volusia County to find some like minded musicians. After posting an ad, Category 5 contacted him and the rest is history. Mike continues to study music theory, bass, and guitar.
